THEATRE THAT TRANSCENDS

Welcome

Theater That Transcends teaches local, underserved communities how to express themselves and address community issues through the art of theater. Using techniques developed by Boal and Freire we equip, empower, and launch children, youth and adults from different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds to use the arts as a means of expression and dialogue in their communities by giving them a space where they can speak honestly and freely about community and cultural issues without cultural restraints.

Theatre can help us build our future rather than just waiting for it.

--Agusto Boal

Upcoming Projects

  • Our first project will take place in P.S. 24K in the heart of Sunset Park Brooklyn. We will be working parents using Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed techniques as well as Michael Rohd's The Hope is Vital Training Manual, and Paulo Freire's educational techniques to engage in dialogue and address the issues pertinent to the community, like their struggles with their families, their culture, their status as immigrants or the oppressed, with poverty, class, aspirations, and anything else that might be of interest to them and their community.

  • The program will be divided into two sections; first 3 months will consist of playing theatre games for ensemble building and will create a system of communication, a sense of trust in each other, and a discussion of important issues. In the second second half of the project the parents will choose one issue based on conversations from the first half that will then become a series of original scenes, which can be interconnected or standalone. These will then be rehearsed and performed for the community at the end of a 10 month period.

  • Childcare will be provided so that adults with children will also be able to participate. Snacks and activities will be made available to the children.

  • Who we are...

    About us

Theatre That Transcends (TTT) was born out of our extensive work through Ekklesia New York Church and Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility's after-school program PAZ, Peace from A to Z, at P.S. 24K. Both of these organizations served as the seed ground for the development of TTT as it is today. The communities they serve, Astoria, Queens and Sunset Park, Brooklyn (respectively) became our partners in learning and discovery as we witnessed the transformative and impacting power of the arts. It is in their honor and through their influence that we developed our core values, which we believe are at the heart of the work that we hope to continue to do for many years to come.

    --Alejandra Duque

    Our Core Values are:

    Art

  • We believe that theatre and the process of creating art is healing. We believe that the arts serve as a medium through which one can be equipped and empowered to act. The act of expression through any medium of art is an act of connection through which we become positive, active participants in our lives and in our community.*

  • People

  • We believe in the instrisic value of every human being. Each individual is unique and has the power to create using their bodies, minds, and voices, as primary instruments of expression.

  • Community

  • We believe that people are connected by common oppressions, common struggles, and common goals to form communities.* We believe that through unity of purpose and body we acquire the power to transform the world around us.

  • Education

  • We believe that education is vital for the continual process and renewal of individuals and communities. We believe that education is born from active dialogue where we learn by doing not just by being shown or told what to do. Information is not enough nd is useless without the power to act.*

  • *Some of our values were inspired in large part by Michael Rohd's The Hope is Vital Training Manual, Thank you for paving the way.
